Chavi Eve Karkowsky, MD, a high-risk obstetrics specialist, and writer will talk about her new book “High Risk: Stories of Pregnancy, Birth and the Unexpected” (Norton/Liveright 2020). Topics include stories from her work in women’s health, often within some of the most under-served communities in the United States; but also how the enormous modern medical system saves us – or fails us – all the time; what modern prenatal genetic testing has and can mean; how “informed consent” has been a disaster throughout US history and what it can mean in the modern age; and what we can do personally about racial and ethnic disparities in maternal mortality rates, among other topics. This talk is of interest to anyone who has ever had or been a baby – regardless of gender.
Dr. Karkowsky currently practices in New York City, where she has been on the front lines of the COVID19 crisis response. She recently moved back to the US after two years of living in Israel, where she practiced in an ultra-Orthodox hospital.
